Intent
At Sherford Vale School we equip pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Our computing curriculum equips children with life skills and knowledge to use technology positively and safely in an ever-evolving digital world.
In line with the National Curriculum, we aim to ensure that all of our pupils:
-Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
-Can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
-Can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.
-Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
Implementation
At Sherford Vale School Years 1-6 have a weekly computing lesson based on the Purple Mash scheme of learning. This allows hands-on learning for children and supports progression across the 3 strands of computing: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy.
During computing lessons, children are set tasks to complete known as ‘2 Dos’ using either Chromebooks or iPads. Pupils are also able to access this learning platform at home. They are taught how to save work and receive verbal or online feedback.
Purple Mash supports progression across the year groups by building on previously learnt skills and includes sessions on online safety. We encourage pupils to manage the resources responsibly and respectfully.
Impact
Through saved work and completed 2Dos, teachers will be able to assess the attainment of each child and provide them with clear feedback and next steps.
The children will be engaged in learning and confident in accessing the learning platform from home and in school and will do this safely.
Children will be able to transfer knowledge of computing to other curriculum areas to support their learning.
